The Genius of Marian

“Beautifully edited, The Genius of Marian retraces both women’s lives to paint a complex and powerful contemporary portrait of motherhood, chronic illness and legacy.”
Dan Hunt, Tribeca Film Festival

“Edited masterfully together to tell the story of a vibrant life and a much-loved woman.”
Scott Stiffler, Chelsea Now

“It’s a remarkable film, not only for the obvious affection with which it was made, but as art.”
John Anderson, Indiewire

“The storytelling quietly and relentlessly keeps the slow disappearance of reality in focus and the impact on both the family and the viewer.”
Jim Fouratt, Reel Deal

Synopsis

The Genius of Marian: follows Pam White in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Her son, filmmaker Banker White, works with her as she attempts to write a book that tributes her mother, artist Marian Williams Steele. As Pam’s family comes together to support her, they must also prepare for the new reality that Alzheimer’s disease brings. The documentary is both a close look at a much-feared illness and an intimate portrait of a loving family. Co-directed and produced by Anna Fitch for Mirabel Pictures.
